13 plays into the Victoria Fringe I finally gave a standing ovation for Homewrecker Hotdogs. And one of the best in 16 years of Fringing. Hip hop opera is, I think, the most difficult format artists can take on. It requires a dramatic, operatic story, great acting and sets, spoken word written to the rigid rhyming scheme of hip hop and the musical timing on top of the play timing. These 2 young men wrote a great story about greed, the temptation of selling out to a corporation, the remorse and conviction to fight to the death to get it back. The tap-dancing hotdog and bear are perfect roles and as set dressers and props. The tough writing for the hip hop structure raises my rating of the word play from excellent to brilliant. Fast words that I wish I could see and hear again. Alas, they are done now! Back to high school for these inspired, intrepid emerging artists. Watch this company "Plays With Words Theatre" from Edmonton for future great performances.
